Designed to facilitate interaction in an extended
family, the shingled country home immediately
welcomes its inhabitants with two of its wings
extended toward the entrance. This figurative embrace
of those walking through the front door is coupled
with a view of a long axis that concludes with the
warmth of a fireplace—which has the unique feature
of an custom sliding screen. Following the main axis
of the house, marked by the primary interior finish of
stained white oak, all of the rooms are aligned
symmetrically on a cross axis, making navigation easy
while also providing views of the forested scenes of
Harbor Country, Michigan. The bunk room has
windows overlooking the great room, connecting the
children playing there to family members below. With
a central kitchen island, sun room, library, and a
multitude of other family-oriented spaces, the large
house maintains comfort and accessibility.
