HOW TO STAGE
SPECIALTY SPACES
The more awkward the space, the more of an opportunity
you have to shine. I love nothing more than taking a small
room destined to be a storage space and turning it into
a craft or sewing room with great organizational pieces,
an inspiration board, and unexpected colors and patterns.
Consider making a wide hallway feel more important
by adding a small table for mail or a bench for shoes. Or
transforming an irregularly shaped room into a yoga studio,
an artist's retreat, a private reading library, or a massage
space? You'd be surprised how easily a long and narrow
room can find new life as a media room with theater
curtains to double as a children's performance stage. Closets
under grand stairways make cozy workspaces or kids'
hideouts. Mudrooms can be multifunctional with not only
places to stash the winter gear but also charging stations
for electronics, a basket for keys, a dog leash hanger, and
family message boards—all things that take very little room
but add wonderful personality. Get creative here. You have
everything to gain. And every square foot that you make
more usable ups the perceived value of the home.
