Mint Julep
yield: 2 drinks
1 cup sugar
1 cup water
40 mint leaves, plus mint sprigs (for garnish)
powdered sugar (for garnish)
2 ounces bourbon per drink
plenty of crushed ice
Combine sugar and water in small saucepan and
heat to make a simple syrup. Bring to slight boil
then add mint leaves. Remove from heat, let cool.
Pour mixture through a fine mesh strainer to
remove mint leaves. For one drink:, add 4 ounces
mint syrup and 2 ounces bourbon into julep cup.
Fill with crushed ice and stir. Garnish with mint
sprig and top with sprinkle of powdered sugar.
A traditional Southern drink made famous by the Kentucky
Derby, this is always served in a silver julep cup. For a different
take, try a good rye whiskey in place of bourbon. We created
a mint julep bar with whiskey choices and fruit syrups.
