greek taverna night
Oh, I had such a wonderful trip to Greece with my dear friend
and her big fat Greek family—they're such warm-hearted
people. The meals were divine. We looked forward to dining
at a different taverna each evening and just couldn't wait to go.
The small local restaurants are decorated with little twinkling
lights and serve family-style meals where platters and platters
of delicious food are brought out in waves. And the ouzo, I
loved the ouzo. It's a drink distilled from grapes and flavored
with the flowering plant anise, and it has a distinct flavor—you
definitely need to develop a taste for it. It's considered an
aperitif to stimulate the appetite and should be served chilled
or over ice. I enjoyed the experience of dining at tavernas so
much that shortly after I returned home, I hosted a taverna
party for six. I've since done it for more than 60, and the
concept is always so well received. It's a great type of party
because the food is delicious and the camaraderie is fabulous.
A lively ambience with Greek music and flowing ouzo usually
leads to dancing. The following recipes are a sampling of some
of the items you can serve at your next Taverna night.
