were warm and extremely giving, and they planned
and catered several church suppers once a month—
my sister and I were always invited to be part of
the project, whether setting the tables or preparing
the meals.
I'm by no means a chef, but I know my way
around the kitchen, I appreciate good food, and I
have been blessed with so many opportunities to
produce grand affairs, from event planning, décor, and
floral design to full-scale catering. I suppose you could
say my career started in college, when I'd throw
elaborate parties for friends—some people stayed
up late partying, others were studying, but I was getting
décor ready for my next get-together and enjoying
every moment. Interestingly, my formal entrée to the
event world came after a casual acquaintance—who
had attended a high-society surprise birthday
