ABOVE: The front of the Northwest Portland home features a
stately entrance with a vertical column reserved for use as a
future elevator shaft should the owners choose to add one at
a later time. The incredibly steep site was a challenge and
required three teams of excavators working to shore up three
sides of the site and move rock and soil up the hill.
LEFT: Tile adds a subtle sheen to the stair risers on the way to
the home library. The space also includes a herringbone floor
and floor-to-ceiling bookcases.
FACING PAGE TOP: The eastern elevation of the home shows
just how steep the site is—the next-door neighbor's home is
nestled closely to the tall structure. The east-facing terrace
separates the top floor common areas. Metal soffits and
fascia at the top are 85 feet above the home's foundation.
FACING PAGE BOTTOM: A substantial kitchen island provides
space for food preparation and entertaining. Behind the
stainless hood, a vertical pattern mirrors the rectilinear style of
the windows that look out over the city of Portland. Architect:
Dennis Batke. Interior Design: Karol Niemi.
