A R C H I T E CT U R E 294 TOP LEFT: The beach house's central staircase cantilevers from the second story as the oak treads appear to float in space. Steel rods create a wall that artistically supports the treads. Although the feature is captivating to behold, it serves another purpose—to keep the views of the waters as visible as possible from the moment you enter. MIDDLE LEFT: The spa-like bathroom features a clean shower, separated from the rest of the room by a single piece of glass. Porcelain 8-by-2-inch tile walls add to the serenity while the angled clerestory window and skylight flood the room with ambient light. BOTTOM LEFT: Low-maintenance finishes in natural, warm wood tones envelop the entry and kitchen. A large island, stainless steel appliances, open shelving, and wood-trimmed windows complete the modern space. Three pendants hang over the bar across from the open stairway leading to the second floor. FACING PAGE: What was originally the homeowners' weekend retreat, is now a beautiful 2,600-square-foot home that suits the homeowners' current and future lifestyles. Tall windows and a second-story balcony mean the owners always enjoy stunning views of the beach, while the angled roofline honors the couple's appreciation of modern minimalism. The most successful projects are collaborative and led by a firm and homeowners who are open to new ideas." –Tim Schouten, AIA
