ABOVE: So seamlessly did the later addition of a sun-
drenched pool area and kid-friendly family room integrate
within the original home design, they appear to have always
been a part of the structural fabric of the Cedar Mills House.
A canopy-like terrace above the blue-tiled hot tub merges the
new addition with the existing living room.
BOTTOM LEFT: Not only was the pool added to the design,
a separate passageway was created to lead out to another
courtyard on the flip side—an ideal space for intimate,
outdoor entertaining and long summer nights spent gathered
around the communal dining table.
FACING PAGE TOP: A study in streamlined, linear grace, the
kitchen, by designer Paul Scardina, was clothed in rich, ribbon
mahogany to bring in an element of warmth and intimacy. A
corner window provides a view out to the courtyard, further
uniting the indoor-outdoor spaces.
FACING PAGE BOTTOM LEFT: The bedroom, with its cozy
Douglas fir-lined ceiling, carefully introduces natural light
through a range of glass that creates brightness without
being too intrusive. With the small square window, the true
depth of the Rastra wall can be glimpsed; its noise-reducing
and thermal properties are well-suited to a bedroom space.
FACING PAGE BOTTOM RIGHT: The living area, which faces
out to the pool, is an effortless, open design with a clean,
contemporary mood. The wood floors feature radiant heat—a
welcome bonus during Portland's brisk winters.
