D E S I G N B U I L D 199 Flat Rock Productions A self-described materials junkie, Eric Richmond, principal of Flat Rock Productions, designs homes that are as responsive to the owners' lifestyles as they are functional works of art. His homes often include the juxtaposition of materials in unexpected combinations that delight homeowners and visitors alike. However, the selection of which material to use—and where—is deliberate and intentional. As Eric says, there are times when a strong, solid material is an appropriate choice, but in living spaces close to people, it is the warmth of wood and stone that communicates a sense of comfort. The result of this philosophy is a portfolio of homes that are sculptural, daring, and approachable; true works of art. Drawing inspiration from the local history and vernacular, Flat Rock's designs seamlessly integrate with the scenery and the lifestyles of the people who live and work nearby. They're dynamic, playful, and utterly intriguing, each a different style, mirroring the way owners live and relax. There's a distinctly human element to the designs. Texture and the evidence of the craftsman's hand—trowel marks on a plaster wall, hammer hits on a board— are some of the most exciting aspects of Flat Rock's aesthetic. Such marks grant the home with a sincerity of craftsmanship that can't be denied. This level of artistry, as well as close collaboration with Eric during the design process, allows people to connect with their home on an intimate level. Watching owners interact in and with their home is one of the greatest joys of Eric's work, and their complete delight with their home drives the Flat Rock team to create masterpieces again and again.
