ABOVE: Inspired by the owners' desire to showcase their
work in the food industry, the kitchen displays an honest,
industrial character. The cold-rolled steel of the large hood
over the island is finished with a minimal amount of lacquer
to protect it from aging. The fixture visually lowers the 12-foot
ceiling and creates a sense of intimacy that contrasts with the
barreled ceiling of the dining room.
LEFT: Modern concrete is poured very quickly into forms to
limit rock crevices and the appearance of layers. To create
a turn of the century industrial feel, the columns throughout
the home were poured slowly and with enough time between
layers to create a rough texture. As one steps into the home,
a bridge above delays awareness of the true height of the
23-foot tall central room, creating a grand entrance that
captivates everyone who walks in the door.
