A R C H I T E CT U R E 243 Swalling Walk Architects Architecture in the Pacific Northwest often depicts a reverence for nature that's distinctive of the region; it complements the landscape while making a statement. So too do the homes designed by Swalling Walk Architects, led by principals Sheila Swalling and Kara Walk. The team's passion for art and the environment are apparent in every design, and they love the fun challenge of melding the contrasting tastes of partners that single-family homes demand. The team, which includes architect Craig Swalling, not only operates with exceptional environmental responsibility, but also works with clients so the experience is fun, inspirational, and truly special. For the architects at Swalling Walk, their work isn't just about building a home; it's also about building relationships. When beginning a project with one of the three LEED Accredited architects at Swalling Walk, homeowners are pleasantly surprised that they get to work with just one architect throughout the design and construction to completion. In addition, they have learned how valuable a skilled contractor is to the success of a project and often partner with Jaymee McMeekin of McMeekin Construction. While the team works collaboratively to refine design ideas, they have learned that one-on-one service creates the ideal experience for the homeowners. By the time clients step into their newly-finished home, they have become friends, and it's the homeowners' joy that brings the most satisfaction to the architects at Swalling Walk. LEFT: Clad in natural stone and cedar board-and-batten siding, the Hood Canal 3,109 square foot home blends harmoniously with the natural environment. The home's foundation serves as a seawall with its concrete deck extending over the water. Innovative self-cleaning glass leaves the view virtually unobscured and is washed clean in each rain—the owner never has to touch it. Two stately fireplaces, floor-to-ceiling windows, and a second story deck off the master bedroom combine to create an impressive façade. Designed in collaboration with Bob Selenes at Ambia.
