A R C H I T E CT U R E 123 Sunshine Coast Home Design Fascinated by form and architecture at a young age, Walter Powell, Architect AIBC, principal of Sunshine Coast Home Design, loves every step of the design and construction process and all the people involved. He makes the honest interactions with his clients fun and exciting as the design unfolds, and is on site during every stage of construction. With no preconception of what the design may become, Walter truly gets to know the site, the owners, and their dreams for their home before putting pencil to paper. It's not uncommon to find him on the site, sketching ideas by hand before using 3D computer models that bring his designs to life. This care and dedication extend to his relationships with clients, who appreciate his easy way of communicating that makes him always available to answer questions or collaborate on the smallest detail, no matter where in the world they happen to be. With over three decades of custom home design experience, paired with his natural artistic ability and appreciation for the site's natural features and opportunities, Walter infuses excitement into the design process. That excitement is apparent the moment you step foot in one of his homes. They are creative, unique, and inspired. Walter's reverence for nature always factors into the design as well, whether it's manifested in incorporating an existing tree into an outdoor deck or outfitting a home with the latest energy efficient features. One could even say that Sunshine Coast Home Design abodes are good for the earth and the soul. The result is a portfolio of homes that exceed their owners' expectations—they're homes with heart. LEFT: Located on a three-acre beach lot on Sunshine Coast, the distinctive home was designed to function as both a residence and an art gallery for the owner's extensive art collection. Corru- gated metal siding in an antique red brick stain, with color flecks of gold and green, pair with white ceramic tile from Portugal to create the home's façade. High-efficiency heat pumps, gas on-demand hot water, passive solar energy, and in-floor radiant heating make the home as energy efficient as it is beautiful.
