C U STO M B U I L D E R 43 ABOVE: A craftsman-style home with an emphasis on energy efficiency features a suspended concrete slab patio with the garage underneath. Thoughtful planning and careful construction—including a solar-powered skylight at the top of the staircase—mean the home has no need for an air conditioning system. On warmer days, the owners open the skylight and a few windows to enjoy a soft breeze through the entire home. FACING PAGE TOP: Doors slide open to merge the living room with the outdoor living space complete with a barbecue area and comfortable seating. Hemlock soffits and cedar shake siding reinforce the seamless integration of the home's interior and nature just beyond. FACING PAGE BOTTOM: Contoured porcelain tile at the back of the master bath adds texture to the room, which also includes a double floating vanity with underlighting that comes on when someone enters the room. Low VOC paints, formaldehyde-free glues, and water-based stains were used throughout the Built Green® Platinum home to keep the interior air quality as healthy as possible. Home design by Alex Voth; interior design by Janet Scagel. Photographs by Ema Peter "Plan, plan, plan! Know what you want up front and be open with your architect, builder, and designer. Develop a roadmap early on for the smoothest experience." –David Adair
