I N T E R I O R D E S I G N 77 JC Scott eco Design Associates Energy efficiency and respect for the environment are hallmarks of Pacific Northwest design. For JC Scott of JC Scott eco Design Associates, harmony between people and the environment extends beyond energy efficiency; it's about the overall health of a space. Guided by his principle of 100 Mile Design, JC sources materials within 100 miles of a project's location whenever possible. The effect is a boost to the local economy and local craftspeople, while cutting down on the carbon impact of transporting materials from more distant locales. From serene spas and fashionable restaurants to captivating private residences, JC designs spaces that are artistic, creative, and simply good for you. He emphasizes the importance of organic, unbleached textiles, green flooring, low-odor paint, and other materials that improve the interior air quality of a home, often encouraging clients to make incremental changes toward better indoor health, if necessary. Educated in architectural history, JC moved to the West Coast in the 1970s, before modern appreciation and training for interior design had permeated the collective conscious. While painting a mural in a discotheque that was being built, he happened to mention to the club owner that he was putting the bar in the wrong place. Little did JC know, visits to see his English pub owner grandmother had taught him about hospitality design from a young age; his understanding of flow and scale had become innate. The contractor hired him as project manager on the spot. Since those early days, JC has become a leader in the eco- luxe design industry. His firm counts many firsts in its history, including the first firm on Vancouver Island to use LED lights in design, but it is his concentration on people's health and wellbeing that fuels his work and brings value to his clientele that's felt for years to come. Once taken down to the bones, the home revealed beautifully curved beams and impressive views. Curved stairs edged in green peace granite from Brazil curve through the space to provide separation between the dining and living areas. Cherry floors ground the space.
