INTRODUCTION T he saying "life is a journey, not a destination" may be cliché, but in the case of California's Central Coast and its evolution over time, pioneering winemakers and passionate dreamers have proven this tenet true. More than 200 years ago, Franciscan monks and early agricultural settlers brought the first European vine cuttings to the region—remnants of this historic era are still visible. Today the Central Coast AVA runs 250 miles from south of San Francisco down through Santa Barbara County, with hundreds of wineries producing grapes and award- winning vintages. The Central Coast has expanded and matured into a well-known, world-class wine region. The 1990s saw a big influx of wineries and growth is steady, as more and more adventuresome winemakers make their way to the hallowed "ocean bed" ground of the Central Coast. With the region's proximity to the Pacific Ocean, microclimates play a big role in cool temperatures, dense fog and breezes allowing for longer growing seasons. The Central Coast is simply a winemaker's paradise. Through this publishing experience I've gained an even fonder appreciation for the people, places and wines of the Central Coast. I've enjoyed the fervent support of the wineries, their communities and wine associations, especially the Paso Robles Wine Country Alliance and Monterey County Vintners and Growers Association. Not only did they welcome me with open arms when I moved to San Luis Obispo County a few years ago, they opened my eyes to the wonders of this rich region. The unique flavor of the Central Coast is something you must experience for yourself. It's a place where winery founders and expert winemakers mingle with visitors like old family and friends. Their genuine passion for the land and the fruits of their labors is clear. My sincere gratitude goes out to each winery proprietor, the creative winemakers and everyone who has helped to make this beautiful book so special.
