107 This beautiful Raised Cottage style house was designed by an architect named Wahrenburger and built by local builder, Fred Meisenhelder, in 1907, for J. F. Remschel and his wife, Luella. The house features large rooms, intricate inlaid parquet floors and beautiful long-leaf pine woodwork. J. H. Remschel came to the United States about 1855 and in the early 1870s he established a lumber yard in Indianola. Eventually hurricanes drove people from Indianola and J.H. relocated several times before settling in Gonzales in 1882. Here he established another lumber yard that he operated until his death in 1894. The business was continued by his sons, Julius F. and Richard A. Remschel, and it became the Remschel Brothers Lumber Company. The lumber yard was operated continuously by the Remschel family until it closed in 1993, over a hundred years. The Texas Historical Marker was placed in 1997. In 2001, Dr. William and Mayron Ellis Cole bought the house and began restoration. They call it home today. J.F. REMSCHEL HOUSE 524 St. Peter Street LEFT DETAIL SHOTS - Special attention was given to restoring the fine architectural details of the home.
