GONZALES COUNTY JAIL MUSEUM
The Gonzales County Jail, built in 1885-1887, designed by architect Eugene T. Heiner, is located on the central
point of the seven squares of the City of Gonzales. It is an excellent example of the Italianate Renaissance
style popular at that time. There are other styles incorporated into the exterior design, all coming together as
an impressive late-1800s building. The Mansard roof, popular in this time period, as well as the original tower,
were removed in 1912. The jail was in use from 1887 until the end of 1975. It is now an early Texas law
enforcement museum.
