63 Henry Walter Matthews' father, William, was one of the original settlers of Green DeWitt's Colony. William's wife was Naomi De Witt, daughter of Green DeWitt. Naomi's wedding dress was used to make the first Come and Take It flag. Henry attended the Gonzales College and later took up farming and ranching. On March 10, 1885, he married Elizabeth Rachel "Betty" Askey. Henry made several trips up the cattle trails and at least one of these drives went as far as Wyoming. Henry met his untimely death in a confrontation with his niece's husband. Henry and Betty completed their Greek Revival style home in 1911 and it remained in the family until 1971 when it was purchased by the current owners John and Iris Anna Christian Mohrmann. The home features a beautiful staircase and original hardwood floors. A large parlor on the right opens into a dining room featuring the original light fixture and dining room table. Owners are John and Iris Anna Christian Mohrmann. H.W. MATTHEWS HOUSE 620 St. Michael Street Photograph by Peggie Schultz Historic Photo courtesy of the Gonzales County archives.
