29 Callan Cellars WOODINVILLE Never in Lisa Callan's wildest dreams did she think she would own a winery. When she went back to school in 2010, enrolling in Washington State University's Enology program, it was simply to follow a hobby and learn as much about the winemaking process as she could. Along the way, she completely fell in love with it. All of it. Not only was Lisa fascinated by the sheer amount of science in winemaking, the artistic creativity, passion, and hard work behind every bottle captivated her. So, she quickly went from making wine in her garage with help from friends, to working for other wineries and eventually acting as assistant winemaker. She gained valuable hands-on experience and skill, which proved very helpful when establishing Callan Cellars in 2015 with husband, Michael—a decision made after much thought and a family meeting in the hot tub, which Lisa firmly supports as the "best place to have a legit meeting!" It turned out to be an inspired decision. Callan Cellars' current production facility and tasting room debuted in 2017, and the first vintage of white wines included the award-winning Picpoul and Grenache Blanc from Boushey Vineyards. Lisa loves the bright, citrusy, and acidic notes from these Rhône varietals. Her reds are just as special, too. The Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah are made from grapes sourced from vineyards including Red Mountains Quintessence and Ciel du Cheval as well as Boushey and Dineen in the Yakima Valley. The micro-boutique winery has already developed a reputation for wonderfully offbeat Rhône-style white wines and delicious reds from Washington's most notable vineyards. Not bad for this wild dream come true. FACING PAGE: Owner Lisa Callan proudly shares one of their latest wines in the barrel room at Callan Cellars.
