239 Caderetta Winery WALLA WALLA A blend of science and soul, tempered with tradition and balance, Cadaretta Winery makes wines that are as multidimensional and distinctive as its history. Founded and owned by the Middleton family, who have deep roots of 120 years in Washington's timber industry, Cadaretta is actually named for a lumber schooner that once carried their goods to market up and down the Pacific Coast in the early part of the 20th century. Southwind, their estate vineyard, is named for the same ship, which was rechristened when it served in World War II. Of course, the story doesn't stop at logs and lumber. The Middletons began farming grapes in the mid '90s, adding winemaking skill and experience to their longstanding agricultural heritage in Washington. In 2005, they brought their grape and wine experience to the Walla Walla area with Cadaretta, thus joining their essential commitment to the land with an abiding passion for making the best wine from that land. The first vines of the Southwind Vineyard were planted in 2007. Located on a steep slope with the highest altitude point of 1,431 feet, the vineyard features both ancient soils above the Missoula flood line as well as more typical soils of the Columbia Valley. Putting the benefits of both soil profiles to use, Cadaretta produces red varietals including Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Malbec, along with several red blends in the Bordeaux and Rhône styles. Their singular white wine is a Sauvignon Blanc-Semillon blend named "SBS." FACING PAGE: The Glasshouse sits atop our Southwind Vineyard and looks out over the Walla Walla Valley.
