process and start a boutique winery. He held back fruit that
year to create a small amount of his own wine to commemorate
the work of his art clients at the Walla Walla Foundry—a
company he and Patty established in 1980. The inaugural
vintage was a blend of Cabernet and Merlot grapes that
featured label artwork by renowned artist Jim Dine. This
very wine would eventually serve as the basis for Foundry's
flagship artisan blend.
Mark and Patty's affinity for art and wine was clearly
passed down to their two children, Jay and Lisa, who now
manage Foundry Vineyards. Jay is the creative director
and winemaker, and Lisa is the sales and event manager.
Most importantly, though, they continue to weave creativity
throughout the winery. In 2017, they teamed up with JOIN
Shop to create an intimate, design-centric gift shop for the
winery's tasting room that features more than 50 independent
designers with thoughtfully curated products ranging from
handmade jewelry and ceramics, to leather goods, letterpress
cards, and more.
Foundry Vineyards also hosts Hatha yoga sessions every
Saturday in the art gallery—and occasionally the sculpture
garden—adding another layer of peaceful, artistic expression
to this one-of-a-kind winery experience.
