3 Columbia Winery WOODINVILLE In 1962, a relentlessly curious group of friends sought to prove the world- class quality of Washington wines, establishing what would become Columbia Winery. This ambitious assembly of 10 friends – including six University of Washington professors – aspired to honor the exceptional growing regions of the Columbia Valley. Nestled in the shadow of the majestic Olympic and Cascade Mountains, low rainfall and long days of intense sunlight create a unique climate capable of producing an array of diverse grape varieties. The history and terroir of the Columbia Valley are found in every sip of the winery's four, nationally available wines: Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Red Blend. The Columbia Winery tasting room, located in the heart of Woodinville wine country, offers small-lot wines sourced from renowned sites such as Red Mountain, Horse Heaven Hills, Wahluke Slope, Yakima Valley and Ancient Lakes. For many years, Master of Wine, David Lake, maintained the founders' curious spirit and solidified their status as an iconic Washington winery. With his guidance, Columbia Winery produced the state's first series of vineyard- designated wines. He was also the first to plant several new grape varieties in the state, including Syrah, Pinot Gris and Cabernet Franc. These varieties are still vital to the region, especially Syrah, which has earned a multitude of critical acclaim. The current team, led by Winemaker, Sean Hails, continues the tradition of crafting exceptional wines with a passion for creating a memorable experience. They continue to source fruit from a wide range of Washington's premier FACING PAGE: Columbia Winery flags welcome visitors to the tasting room, located in the heart of Woodinville wine country.
