Christian Zapatka Architect
WASHINGTON, DC
Seeking to fuse the best of both modern and traditional design
in order to create classic, timeless structures, the award-winning
Christian Zapatka Architect designs new houses as well as additions
to and renovations of existing houses. Founded in 2001, the firm
has completed over 100 projects in the Washington, D.C. area. Only
three years after its founding, the firm was one of five winners in the
AIA Rowhouse of the Future Competition. More recently, Christian
and his team were invited to participate in the History Channel's
Future Cities Competition, presenting their work at Washington's
Union Station. The firm's work has been featured in numerous
publications, including Home & Design's (DC/MD/VA) portfolio of
top designers. Christian has also recently served as a juror for the
Palladio Awards.
A member of the American Institute of Architects and a Fellow of
The American Academy in Rome, Christian earned his master's
degree in architecture from Princeton University. While there, he
was awarded the Norton Prize for excellence in design and then
apprenticed for two years with Michael Graves. In 1991, he was
awarded the Rome Prize in architecture to spend a year in residence
at the American Academy in Rome. Zapatka also taught architectural
design and history for seven years at Princeton, Columbia, and
the University of Michigan. He has authored two books, with The
American Landscape being awarded an AIA International Book
Award in 1998. Zapatka is a member of the Committee of 100 on the
Federal City and a member of the Cosmos Club in Washington, D.C.
