18 THE MODERN RESIDENCE BELOW & FACING PAGE: Walls of light-colored Canyon Castle stone, dark-stained wood ceiling beams, and vintage barnwood shelves offer a rustic mountain feel, while the six-foot-tall by five-foot wide fireplace with a chevron-patterned firebox brings a touch of the French countryside indoors. Opposite the comfortable seating area is a sizeable kitchen. We made a vast curved breakfast counter, flanked by a matching wooden appliance tower, which delineates the space while keeping it open to the views. Symmetrical at its center, the overhanging framework and negative-edge pool forms a matrix focal point of this hillside hideaway. Dramatic framework underline my trademark use of symmetry to draw the eye through the house and out to the stunning views of the valley beyond. A linear see-through fireplace frames the views of the city and mountain peaks on the horizon. A sunken seating area separates the fireplace and the pool. Photographs by Stephen Thompson Photography
