2 circle square balance hue Circle, Square, Balance, and Hue, at first glance, appear to be simple words that describe principals of design. However, as the title of this book, created during an evening spent with close friends, has a much deeper meaning; one that represents my philosophies, abilities, and attitude toward interior design and life. When exploring these words on a more personal level, the circle symbolizes interconnection or the bringing together of elements that form new and better experiences. Similarly a square, not in the sense of a polygon with four equal sides, signifies symmetry, an implied source of beauty and stability. Balance, which I consider a more thoughtful interpretation of the ongoing processes of communicating, prioritizing, setting goals, and expanding awareness; all this while remembering to have fun, is essential to achieving individual strength. And finally, hue is more than the standard definition of color gradation, rather the overall depth of form and appearance that affects both perception and emotion. A s a child, I knew what I wanted to be when I grew up long before other kids my age. My father owned a lumberyard in Iowa and I remember helping him with various construction projects over the years. And, as I look back at that time, I believe that it fueled an innate desire to be creative and to design things. What I would learn as I grew older is that there really is nothing more rewarding than bringing a vision, a sketch, a mood board to reality—breathing life into what was once an empty or uninspired space and enriching people's lives through design. It is hard to believe it's been more than 30 years since starting my career in 1987. I graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Interior Design from the University of Arizona and also studied abroad in Copenhagen, Denmark, which provided an invaluable global perspective on design. introduction by Lori Carroll
