"A touch of the dramatic is a great way to create an interesting, impactful space."
–Debra May Himes
ABOVE LEFT: Arches were an important detail to soften the large footprint
and expansive ceiling of this Santa Barbara style-home in the southeast
part of the Phoenix metro area. The dining room is a formal yet accessible
gathering place, where the cobalt-blue inlay tile under the table reinforces
the elegance of the space. A custom, hand-painted Mexican tile design
motif borders the floor and is referenced throughout the space.
ABOVE RIGHT: The remarkable art of the polished travertine flooring
continues into the living area, where the cobalt-blue tile reemerges to
create a transition from the kitchen. Likewise, the wood-paneled archway
was custom-designed and provides a beautifully commanding gateway
between the two spaces.
FACING PAGE: Attention-grabbing details, when used properly with
contrasting elements, foster interest and intimacy in a space. Such is
the case in this richly warm powder bath in a northern Arizona mountain
retreat that features a copper sink cabinet with shatter glass accents,
designed by Debra. A glass artist created the sink bowl. The feature wall
of the bathroom is clad in black angular slate rock detail with copper and
slate banding framing the mirror. The other walls and ceiling are finished
in red and copper Venetian plaster to complete the dimensional radiance
of the space.
