7 BELOW: This small kitchen embodies light and sparkle. The island is designed for seating on one side and varied storage on the other. By design, there are no appliances on it; the island itself functions as a serving counter. Storage is a premium, so we maximized the space available with two cupboards flanking a built-in display cabinet for the clients' white pottery and sterling silver collection—which, when lit at night, becomes quite striking. The built-in cupboards were designed to precise scale and covered by a pair of 18th-century shutters. They display original painting of urns and flowers and were the inspiration for the color palette and other elements in the space. This architecturally contemporary home in Texas provided an opportunity to design floor-to-ceiling cabinetry with the emphasized beauty of the wood and the simplicity of the hardware. Natural stone countertops and backsplashes, plus light-tone floors provide the contrast to the dark cabinets and define a subtle geometry within the space. Clear glass shows off a few of the client's favorite pieces while etched glass allows others to be present but not studied.
