331 Specialty Spaces T here are endless ways to customize a home. Some owners choose to make simple changes, such as using specific wall colors, while others want entire structure modified around their unique needs. Such opportunities allow for limitless possibilities, and as interior designers we use our creativity to design spaces that make our clients' lives easier and more comfortable. Specialty areas allow residents to address specific interests. For instance, if homeowners want an exercise space, we can create that, which allows for treadmills and stationary bicycles to keep f rom crowding or changing the relaxing ambience of a master retreat or guest bedroom. Specialty spaces can serve a wide range of purposes: pet rooms, a home office, display spaces for collections, spas with saunas, massage rooms, recording or art studios, or cozy outside retreats, for instance. These spaces are fun to design since they are unique to each owner. We once created a room specifically for a homeowner who wanted to showcase a unique, extensive antique doll collection. We installed an antique bookcase with glass doors to display the impressive collection, plus ensured that lighting precisely illuminated the dolls. Nearly any home can be made to include a specialty space—you don't need an entire room devoted to your interest. Sometimes an outdoor spot or some custom built-ins will serve you well. Challenges do arise, which can include pinpointing an ideal location that will lend itself to privacy, and possibly dimension requirements. But don't be af raid to get creative and do some research. If you choose to use an interior designer, he or she will likely work with your budget and space. Let this chapter inspire you to take a look around your home and see what specialty space you'd like to create.
