373 David Jay Weiner Architects New York, NY ABOVE: The Colorado House in Crestone, was designed for a couple as a weekend escape and eventual retirement home. The 3,300-square-foot house sits in the high desert of the San Luis Valley with exceptional views of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and the Great Sand Dunes National Monument to the southeast. The location is known for its serenity and environmental uniqueness, and the house was designed in response to this while integrating the spirituality and history of the area. FACING PAGE: The house is oriented toward the mountain views on a six-acre site and includes an open great room for living and dining along with a kitchen and built- in breakfast nook. Large areas of glass are used to f rame the views, allow for passive solar orientation, and blur the distinction between inside and outside. The property is remote and located off the grid, and with more than 300 sun days a year, the house is powered by a solar photovoltaic system. Photographs by Bill Ellzey See more about David J.
