56 Inspired Modern Living Every time I sit down with a client for the first time, it's the start of a grand adventure. Where is it going to take us, and what discoveries are we going to make as we proceed? Although we may be starting with a clean slate for the design, there are a lot of preconceived ideas and influences in any project. Some of the influences may be limiting to some degree, but the ones to concentrate on are those that bring the spark to the project concept. The conversations start out simply by talking about the homeowner's goals for the project as well as any issues with their current living environment that we do or do not want to repeat. As the goals of the project are established, an "idea book" starts to take shape. This is the fun part of the conversation: exploring the interest behind each idea and wish, from style and aesthetic to program and layout. Even a photograph of a room can introduce an idea. The discussion of budget and scope are also important to ensure we're looking at the overall project viability but should not be thought of as a limiting factor. This dialogue with the client regarding their ideas and dreams are the building blocks for the exploration. Now, it is time to have some fun, as the discussion turns to the grand picture, the views, the space requirements, and the concept that drives the entire project. The sketch paper is the architect's secret weapon in working out different ideas. Sketching out a couple of different bubble design concepts — with the clients at the table — allows them to participate in the idea generation and to understand the concept behind room placement. This project is for the client and is designed for their lifestyle and family. We need to show the different options and grand ideas to find out what sparks their excitement. This process is designed to understand and bring alignment to the project vision. Implementation of the design concept is important, but not always easy. Balancing the constraints of budget, program, and site with the grand concept are now the task at hand. This is where the construction expertise and the design strength of the architect show through as we work to beautifully achieve the design concept with the appropriate complexity of construction details and methods and within the project goals and budget.
