7 California's North Coast & Gold Country The Birthplace of California Wine Napa Valley didn't invent California wine, but it's where the world learned to take it seriously. Just over 30 miles long, the valley's patchwork of volcanic and alluvial soils, combined with fog that rolls in most mornings and burns off by noon, gave Cabernet Sauvignon the structure and ripeness that put American wine on the map. Cross the Mayacamas Mountains into Sonoma and the story diversifies — Russian River Valley's cooler pockets favor Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, Dry Creek Valley leans into old-vine Zinfandel, and Alexander Valley splits the difference with Cabernet that rivals its Napa neighbors at a fraction of the reputation-driven price. Push further north and the land gets wilder, the wineries smaller, and the stories more personal. Anderson Valley's fog-drenched hillsides in Mendocino County produce sparkling wine and Pinot Noir that rival Burgundy's, often from vineyards a single family has tended for three generations. Lake County, still finding its national reputation, offers volcanic soil and high- elevation Cabernet from wineries most wine drinkers have never heard of — yet. East of it all, in the Sierra Foothills, lies a different kind of history. Gold Rush miners planted the region's first Zinfandel vines in the 1850s, and some of those original plantings are still bearing fruit today. Amador and El Dorado counties never chased scale or celebrity; they simply kept making wine, generation after generation, in the same gold-country towns their families settled a century and a half ago. What connects Napa's polish to the Foothills' dust is the same thing that defines boutique wine everywhere: a family, a plot of land, and a refusal to let either get lost in translation. The following pages introduce you to the ones worth knowing. Napa Valley, Sonoma Valley, Mendocino & Lake Counties and Sierra Foothills August Cellars, Willamette, OR Alloro Vineyards, Sherman, OR
