At the suggestion of friend André Tchelistcheff, Don slowly
acquired over 1,000 acres of land on Pritchard Hill. In 1978,
David—immediately hooked on vines—joined his father in
clearing the land and planting grapes. Proof that a formal
education isn't always the answer, David learned everything
he knows about winemaking while scrubbing the tanks at
Chappellet Vineyard & Winery, Joseph Phelps Vineyards, and
Schramsberg Vineyards. Today winemaker Nile Zacherle and
a highly insightful team cultivate small amounts of cabernet
sauvignon, cabernet franc, merlot, petite verdot, sangiovese,
and nebbiolo.
