The dream of Shenandoah Valley
Westminster-Canterbury began in 1980
when parishioners at the Christ Episcopal
Church in Winchester envisioned a quality
facility to serve seniors in the area. Their
vision soon spread through friends
and connections, all who campaigned
to established a first-class Lifecare
community.
Two years and several agreements later,
the project turned from vision to reality.
Construction was in full swing with both
the Episcopal and Presbyterian churches
sharing sponsorship and the family of
Mr. and Mrs. William H. Lawrence Jr.
generously donating the first plot of land
for the beautiful campus, which would
later blossom into a sprawling 65 acres
with subsequent acquisitions.
The original founders' dream is now
duly reflected in the community's
mission statement:
Shenandoah Valley
Westminster-Canterbury is a not-for-profit,
intimate, church-related, continuing care,
retirement community that is committed
to enabling residents to use their gifts
fully, live their lives richly, and enjoy with
dignity the years God has given them.
Many of the original leaders or members
of their families still remain active in
supporting the mission of SVWC.
