RIGHT: An example of AOME's contemporary and conceptual
work, the home features a 20-foot glass and steel pivot door
that transforms the dining room into a very literal indoor-
outdoor space with a few cranks of the hand-operated system
of pulleys and levers. The dual-function mechanism allows
the owners to raise the chandelier and then swing the door
up to open the indoors to the captivating lakeside scenery.
BELOW: The formal living room opens to the outdoor living
room, creating one large space for entertaining. Created in
collaboration with Turner Exhibits, the mechanism that lifts
the chandelier and the pivot door is an intriguing mechanical
expression of a solution to the problem of a two-ton door
that needs to pivot easily. Its workings were intentionally left
exposed to add to the industrial aesthetic of the home.
