TOP & BOTTOM LEFT: A variety of exterior decks and gardens
provide a fluid relationship between indoors and out and
accommodate a range of activities from entertainment to
quiet contemplation. The building balances the need for
privacy in a bustling urban setting with the owners' desire for
abundant natural light and ample outdoor space.
FACING PAGE TOP: The building steps down on the south
side to provide a generous deck off of the residence,
while lowering the scale and preserving daylight for their
adjacent neighbors.
FACING PAGE BOTTOM: Moveable Ipe wood screens slide in
tracks on the exterior of the commercial spaces allowing them
to be adjusted to fit changing interior layouts and displays.
The wood was salvaged from decking materials in a Northern
California steam driven sawmill. Over 70 percent of the wood
used in the project was either reclaimed or sustainably
harvested material.

"We strive for connectivity
in design. The fluidity
of interior and exterior,
the way the home blends
with the local culture,
and how it interacts
with the environment
are essential."
