D E S I G N B U I L D 279 Don Young & Associates The feel of a hammer in one's hands; an incredible diversity of projects. The satisfaction of finishing something that will make people's lives better. It's easy to understand why Don Young, principal of Don Young & Associates, was drawn to the design/ build industry at an early age. His first large-scale project was a much-needed 120-foot bridge that his friend's father's construction company was charged with building while Don was still in high school. From this and other early hands-on experiences, he developed a keen eye for detail that quickly made him a desired construction partner throughout the Portland area. With this reputation for quality work and creativity, Don founded Don Young & Associates in 1980 and has since enjoyed a business built solely on referrals. Inspired by the variety of architecture in the region and the personalities of the people he gets to work alongside, Don believes in providing transparent and stress-free service to his clients while creating livable works of art. The firm's size is intentionally smaller than some of the others in the area, but for a good reason. Each project manager is assigned just one project from start to finish. This means that a homeowner can call their project manager at any time and he or she knows exactly what is happening with the build. This level of focus helps ensure the best possible experience for clients and the utmost level of focus for the Don Young & Associates crew. As part of a larger team that includes the homeowner, architect, designer, and contractors, Don Young & Associates provides an atmosphere of clear communication, one-on-one service, and flexibility that clients appreciate. From modern to colonial style—and anything in between—Don and his team love the excitement of creating a unique home that is great for the environment and enriches the lives of those who live in it. Clad in local cedar siding, the home is built on recycled concrete repurposed from the previous home's foundation. At the front, a concrete wall begins alongside the front door, travels through the length of the home and emerges once again on the opposite side. Photograph courtesy of Jeremy Bitterman PORTLAND
