INTERSTICE Architects
SAN FRANCISCO, CA
After years of working in separate disciplines, Andrew Dunbar
and Zoee Astrachan founded INTERSTICE Architects in the
spirit of "total design" – a seamless integration of structure,
place, materials, and innovation. The multi-disciplinary firm
includes architects, landscape architects, urban designers, and
visual artists who design public and private spaces of varying
scales yet the team always focuses on the broadest possible
interpretation of the designed realm. That is to say, they
embrace every opportunity to push the boundaries.
As such, diversity is a hallmark of INTERSTICE's mission,
as they explore ideas that cross scale and discipline. Aside
from celebrating this multiplicity of form, one of the most
compelling influences behind the firm's work is rooted in
ecological aspirations, often challenging conventions of form
and public space. From developing small, highly detailed
"urban furniture" installations to re-envisioning acres of coastal
frontage as a response to the challenges of rising sea levels
and bayside habitat degradation, the team is highly attuned to
innovative architectural and landscape solutions.
The firm's work is also often an experiential response
to broader issues and opportunities, leading to urban
transformation — from reversing the loss of bird and insect
habitats, to using repurposed waste stream materials,
protecting and enhancing ancient trees, and creating
minimalist, eco-aware solutions for complicated programs.
